The 221 series is a JR West suburban train that was introduced in 1989, and was used for the special rapid service along with the 117 series when it was introduced. The leading car has a streamlined front end with large curved glass, and as the first new model since the launch of JR West, it was given the nickname "Amenity Liner".
With the introduction of the 223 series, it was retired from special rapid service around 2000, but has continued to be used on major lines throughout the Keihanshin area ever since. Also, since 1998, yaw dampers have been added to some bogies, and the lower part of the skirt of the leading car has been extended since 2004.
