The SL Ginga operates on the Kamaishi Line, which has steep slopes and long tunnels, and uses special carriages that have been modified from the Kiha 141 series used by JR Hokkaido as passenger cars.

Each carriage is painted with illustrations of the constellations and animals that appear in "Night on the Galactic Railroad," and a planetarium is installed on board.

  • The head and tail lights are equipped with a constant-light board and an ON-OFF switch
  • The head and tail lights are illuminated by white LEDs
  • The headlights are illuminated in a color close to incandescent light thanks to the use of a color prism
  • Uses a power source with a flywheel
  • Uses a new current collection system and silver wheels
  • Uses an M-13 motor
