The DD51 type deployed in Hokkaido was characterized by its reinforced cold and snow resistant structure with snowplows and rotating windows, as well as the removal of the radiator cover on the side of the bonnet in some cases. It replaced steam locomotives such as the D51 and C57 types and was used for both freight and passenger trains.
